Small Business Saturday Recap

The Power of Local: Why MEC Prioritized Small Business Saturday

Large-scale Black Friday deals have traditionally dominated the weekend following Thanksgiving. However, since its inception in 2010, Small Business Saturday has served as a critical counter-movement—an official initiative dedicated to encouraging consumers to shop local and invest their dollars directly into independent businesses rather than massive national retailers.

On November 29th, the Maestro Entrepreneur Center team took a public stance in support of this vital day. Our team attended the official kickoff event, setting the stage for a weekend dedicated to local commerce and reinforcing the mission we uphold daily.

A City-Wide Commitment to Shopping Small

The spirit of Small Business Saturday was palpable across San Antonio, with numerous major venues hosting markets to provide local vendors with prime visibility. This collaborative effort ensured that consumers had vibrant local alternatives to traditional big-box stores.

Key markets that anchored the weekend included:

  • The Peace Market
  • The San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) Holiday Market
  • The Tobin Center Holiday Market
  • The Holidays at Hemisfair Gift Market
  • The festive events at Brackenridge Park

MEC in Action: Vendor Spotlights

Our team focused its efforts on two key locations: the Peace Market and the SAMA Holiday Market, ensuring we supported the diverse base of entrepreneurs our organization is built to serve.

Through our shopping, we proudly supported many vendors, including:

  • Deva Designs: Known for their beautiful handmade pottery, representing the rich artisan culture.
  • Lorenza’s Imports: Offering curated goods that celebrate global and local craftsmanship.
  • Alicia Tapp Designs: Showcasing unique, high-quality, wearable art and accessories.

These are just a few of the many resilient small businesses and entrepreneurs that the Maestro team supported. Our purchases generated immediate revenue for these enterprises, translating into local jobs and community reinvestment.

The Holiday Season: A Commitment to Continued Support

Our actions this weekend directly align with the core mission of the Maestro Entrepreneur Center. Every dollar spent with a small, local business contributes exponentially more to the local economy than a dollar spent with a large, national chain.

As we transition fully into the holiday shopping season, we urge all our partners and subscribers to make a conscious choice to shop small. Every local transaction strengthens our economic ecosystem and directly funds the growth of the small businesses the Maestro Entrepreneur Center supports.
